In the Mumbai terror attack, the high profile ATS chief (Anti-Terror Squad) Mr. Hemant Karkare was killed. Also celebrated encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and Mumbai’s additional commissioner of Police (east) Ashok Kamte were gunned down by the terrorists.

Karkare, a 1982 batch IPS officer, became the head of ATS in January this year following his return to the state cadre after serving seven years in Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) in Austria. [source]
