According to AFP news, India’s former cricket captain Sourav Ganguly said on Tuesday (7th August 2008) that he would retire from international cricket after the four test series against Australia.

Ganguly said: “This will be my last series. Before coming here, I spoke to my team-mates and hopefully I will go out with a winning knock.”

Ganguly was India’s most successful Test captain with 21 wins in 49 matches. Saurav Ganguly has so far scored 6,888 runs in 109 Tests with an average of 41.74 with 15 centuries.

He has 11,363 runs in 311 matches and member of the 10000 runs club with 6 others.

Ganguly was born on 8 July 1973 in Kolkata. His father ran a flourishing print business and was one of the richest men in Kolkata. He had a luxurious childhood and was nicknamed the Maharaja. Though he was asked to concentrate on his studies and not play cricket, he was inspired to do so by his brother Snehasish Ganguly, an accomplished left-handed batsman for Bengal. [from wikipedia]
