Diwali or Deepavali – festival of light – is one of the major festival in India. It is celebrated in the month of October / November. When is Diwali 2008? Diwali 2008 is on 28th of October 2008.

It is a significant festival in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. Diwali is celebrated all over the world by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs.

During Diwali, prayers are offered to goddess Lakshmi – Hindu deity of wealth. Diwali may have originated as a harvest festival.

In Northern part of India, Diwali is celebrated as the homecoming of King Rama of Ayodhya after a fourteen year exile in the forest. The people of Ayodhya welcomed King rama by lighting rows (avali) of lamps (Deep). Diwali (or short name of Deepavali) means rows of lamps.

But in Southern part of India, Deepavali is celebrated as the remembrance of Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura.

In western part of India, it is celebrated in honor of the day King Bali went to rule the nether-world by the order of Vishnu. Remember, in Kerala Onam is celebrated in August/September to mark the home coming of King Bali or Mahabali.

Main celebrations of Diwali, to light firecrackers and fireworks at night. Nowadays there is a significant growth in campaigns on creating awareness over the adverse impacts of noise and air pollution in many areas of India. In Delhi, the pollution levels during Diwali celebrations have been visibly reduced because of the awareness campaign by Delhi Government through advertisement in newspapers and by participating school children.
